Wild Life Week
Wildlife Week 2024 (2nd – 8th October)
Wildlife week is celebrated annually from 2 nd to 8 th October. This year the celebrations at Bannerughatta Biological Park included various activities conducted along the theme "Wildlife Conservation through co-existence".
Day 1: A clean up drive was conducted by our security team in the zoo parking area. Awareness sessions were conducted with our Zoo Volunteers and students from Christ University on various conservation themed topics through interactive sessions including street play. Our Zoo Keepers conducted talks on their animals as well as had a conversation with visitors on co-existence with urban wildlife. A special guided tour with a species in focus was hosted at Butterfly Park and the day ended with a movie screening for Zoo visitors.
Day 2: A clean up drive was conducted by NSS students from AMC College. An interactive Zoo Scavenger Hunt was organised for Zoo Visitors to ignite interest and observation of our zoo residents during their visit. Participants received a seed pen as memento and wildlife movie screening was also arranged for all visitors.
Day 3: Animal Yoga for zoo staff, including postures inspired by animals. An interactive session was conducted for students from Christ University regarding co-existence and various stalls were set up by WWF, India for wildlife and nature related games.
Day 4: A guided tour of the butterfly park with highlights such as giving an insight about the behaviour, management of butterflies and other insects, their life cycles and release of eclosed butterflies in the dome area. Interactive stall was set up in the zoo, highlighting illegal trade of animals and their products as well as how citizens can contribute by not creating demand, followed by discussion on co-existence with urban wildlife such as snakes and leopards. Biodiversity quiz and word scrabble competitions were also organized for zoo visitors with seed pens for the winners and pug mark ink impression for everyone as a memento for co-exitance with wildlife and nature.
Day 5: Volunteer Selection Program was initiated to invite citizens to act as wildlife ambassadors through volunteering. This session included an introduction about the park, volunteering role and an insight about the applicant volunteers. Interactive sessions were organized for park visitors through a guided tour of the butterfly park, touch table in the zoo along with quiz competition and handimal pledge to instil a sense of conservation responsibility in visitors. Additionally, wildlife movie screening along with a meaningful discussion session was conducted.
Day 6: Visit to the park by students from Government Model Primary School, Nagashetti Halli along with staff and volunteers from WWF India. An interactive discussion session was conducted along with nature art competition where the students created art using natural material available around the Zoo. Wildlife Movie screening was open to all zoo visitors in our zoo auditorium.
Day 7: An informative nature walk was organised for citizens to highlight the ecological importance of the biodiversity around the park. Insights from our naturalist included, on ways to co-exist with nature and wildlife and this was reinforced by the participants taking the wildlife pledge which highlights the fundamental duties of citizens towards conservation of natural resources. An online quiz was made available for people of all ages groups to test their knowledge on common myths and threats which contribute towards human-animal conflict, depletion of wildlife populations as well ecological significance of a few urban wildlife.
